The sun bled, the moon darkened. The sky dissolved, the stars fell. The wind swayed in anger, the rains froze. The night is terrified, for the shrill tremor of insects that vivifies her has become still. Darkness is pleased that she has conquered light. Sorrow and bitterness cry out; the seas hear, and hold their breath. Their mighty waters become still. Mother Nature heaves in despair as she watches her green gradually beaten into brown. Chaos has descended from above and swallowed us aback.
Men are paddled to their fantasy islands, where they explore and harness their lust for wealth, riches, fame, and power. But they do this at the expense of their fellow human lives. Blood flows on our streets, we feed hatred with the sap of life, and we respire all manner of vices and atrocities. How belittled and miserable the life of man is made to seem!
The utopian society our heroes and heroines envisioned and gave up their lives for is fast-approaching impossible. The values our ancestors instructed us with are rapidly going down the drain. Whatever remains is quickly being tangled by the immense web of confusion we weave out of our irresponsibility. The gods peep and are ashamed; they are no longer with us. They reject our offerings and libations.
How immense our misery! Oh, how havoc wears a dense haze and hangs on our atmosphere! Oh, how terror chokes the night! Yet we lay fast asleep. Being besotted by our selfishness, we became blinded by our ego. What then are we becoming? What are we making of our world? Are we being cursed to act like this? Or does the saying hold, that “the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the teeth of the children are set on edges.” Or maybe, we are victims of our self-induced circumstances. Howbeit, even now the saying holds, “turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer, things fall apart, the center cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”
Nevertheless, however bad our situation seems, when we sit to reflect deep down into the silence of our souls, we can hear through our mind’s ear, a soft and whispering voice waving through our hopelessness, despair, and calamities, reassuring us of love, peace, hope, and security. It reminds us of what we are made of and who we are: a strong people, a tough giant, a mighty nation who, even falling and failing, can rise again and be reformed. But who is ready to listen? Who is ready to invest their hopes in a better future?
