Everywhere and Nowhere

Artist’s statement

Autumn Nicole’s “Everywhere and Nowhere” explores memory, connection, presence, and light—reaching to grasp something ephemeral, dually a question and a momentary flash of uncertainty. It captures the feeling of reaching for something, yet not being entirely sure if what you are trying to grasp is there—carefully considering common and shared experiences among American audiences through the play and fascination with the presence of light in evocation. Simultaneously, it alludes to the impending potential extinction of fireflies in North American areas.

On Spotting a Man Contemplating Jumping Where I-35 Meets I-37

I’ve stood there, too.
No, not that exact spot. But,
at the intersection
of hopelessness and decision.
Take a moment.
There’s no rush. The cars are stopped.
The police are here. I am here.
And I am sending you
good thoughts and
prayers I save
for occasions like this.
Come back
toward the median, the striped choices
made of asphalt. Come back
toward us.
Behold your procession.
No moving, no honking. Even the ambulance
below is quiet. Our busy lives
will wait.
So too, us, bumper-to-bumper,
closer
than we’d otherwise be.
Friend, I love you.
And I see you. I see you.
